Qualcomm Debuts Two Flagship Chips Built Around On-Device AI
Qualcomm has officially unveiled its next generation of flagship mobile processors — the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 — putting on-device artificial intelligence at the center of the pitch as it kicks off Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui, Hawaii.
Two chips, one strategy
Rather than a single successor to last year's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, Qualcomm is splitting its flagship line in two. The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will power a broad range of premium smartphones, while the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 sits above it as the more powerful option, adding dedicated graphics AI hardware and higher-end media capabilities.
Chris Patrick, Qualcomm's SVP and GM of mobile handsets, framed the dual approach as giving device makers "greater choice as we collectively shape the capabilities of the next generation of intelligent, personalized, mobile experiences."
Both chips are built on TSMC's 2nm process. The Extreme variant uses two Prime cores that can boost up to 5GHz — reportedly a first for a mobile CPU — alongside six performance cores, while the standard Gen 6 tops out around 4.4GHz. Both share a new "Flex Cache" architecture, a dynamically shared cache pool the cores draw from as needed, and a rearchitected Adreno GPU delivering roughly 35% better graphics performance and 40% improved power efficiency over the previous generation.
The AI push
Qualcomm's headline focus this generation is agentic AI — on-device systems that act with more context and autonomy rather than routing tasks to the cloud. Both chips get an upgraded "Sensing Hub" capable of running small AI models with up to 200 million parameters locally, which Qualcomm says enables features like a local voice scribe, speaker separation, and building a behavioral memory to improve task-automation suggestions over time. The Extreme Gen 6's Sensing Hub reportedly delivers about 85% more performance than its predecessor while using 20% less power.
The chips are also built to run full voice-in, voice-out AI agents on-device, and the Extreme variant adds a new accelerator element aimed at making AI model processing more efficient.
What ships where
Devices are expected to arrive quickly: Xiaomi and Honor phones built on the new chips could launch within days or weeks, with the OnePlus 16 and iQOO 16 also reportedly in line. Broader adoption — including Samsung's Galaxy S27 and Galaxy Z Fold 9 — is expected to follow in the first half of 2027.
